Summer Shades
May 24, 2008 by Haidee
I love my Ray Ban aviators (and I like to point out that I’ve had these for almost 8 years, so well before you saw them on the Hills), but I’m in the market for some new shades that are more durable. The massive, round, swallow-my-face, Nicole Richie sunglasses can’t still be in style, are they? I rather like these leopard shades from Anthropologie.
Scarpa carries a good selection, including these cool wooden frames. They are super cute in the display case, but look ridiculous on me and didn’t stay on my face. And at over $350, they are a bit pricey, but definitely something different.
I am also quite fond of these Tom Ford sunglasses spotted on Jennifer Aniston. Only $324 to feel like a celebrity all summer long.

So if we’re moving beyond the bug eyes, what is the next eyewear trend?
*6/7 UPDATE* Hells yea. Tom Ford knock offs for less than $10. http://www.wetseal.com/catalog/product.jsp?categoryId=106&subCategoryId=197&productId=10673&ref=ws_aff_pf_k108283&source=pf#

It’s good you mentioned Ray Ban. My Dad used to have a pair of Aviators sometime back and I used to steal them, but at the time, my face was teenie.
Ray Ban’s still rock. There’s a lot of style out there that I feel are overpriced. I drive a lot and good sun glasses are always a plus.
Tried on some Revo’s a couple months ago and there’s something about them. They fit my face so well?
Zikki, you need a gravatar with your aviators on.
I tried the Tom Ford sunglasses on in the duty free at London Heathrow.. They looked awesome, but even on Ebay, they are a bit too pricey in my opinion. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-TOM-FORD-TF08-TF-08-692-BRW-JENNIFER-SUNGLASSES-AUT_W0QQitemZ170224879443QQihZ007QQcategoryZ155189QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Or should I go for it?
I don’t mind spending a few hundred dollars for sunglasses, but they have to be classic enough that I’ll get years of use out of them. I bought a pair of Oliver Peoples about three years ago for something like $300 and I still wear them (though I change them out with a fun pair of Kate Spades and some D&Gs, both found at Loehman’s). My favorite thing about Oliver Peoples: no massive, flashy logo on your temple. There’s a small one that could be seen back behind your ear if you have short hair, but other than that, no logo.
Haidee. I need help with the gravator. I have a picture of my niece on gravator and don’t know how to activate it on my profile. She’s so pretty… and stylish.
Upstart. Love your comments. $300 is such a steep price for me when it comes to sunglasses.
I like the old ragged look when I’m relaxing and try smart when working. Suits are the only piece of clothing I own that are over $300.
Just paging through a magazine and saw some Modern Aviators by Dior Homme. Maybe I should put these on my wish list. Why? They’re $330.
I used to buy cheapie sunglasses, but I always lost them. It’s VERY hard to misplace or lose $300 sunglasses.
I probably spent more on sunglasses back when I didn’t buy expensive ones because I was constantly replacing them!
I’m still in cheapie haven because I either lose or break them. I see your point when it comes to buying expensive sunglasses, so I’ll give it a shot in a month or so.
How I do? That’s the question.
My buddy just got a pair of red Ray Bans that look pretty rediculous on him. But, he was wearing them last night at a concert and people kept stopping him to tell them they loved his glasses.
I used to lose sunglasses all the time, but now I keep them on a croakie around my neck, so that when I take them off, they are always right there. It makes me look cool too, especially when I pop my collar.
Keep in mind that the folks over at the ‘villain know me as the guy who used to live in the van down by the river (not exactly true), but if I ever spend three hundred dollars on sunglasses, I hope I can find a pair that covers my lobotomy scar fashionably.

I just got contacts after a couple yrs without them and a new pair of sunnies, Maui Jim’s. The polarized lenses on these bad boys are sweet. Before I used to use these Gucci sunnies with RX lenses, but they are not polarized, and neither were the originals.
So begins my gripe with what we call sunglasses, which aren’t really sun protectors as much as tinted lenses on fancy frames. Unless the lenses are polarized I don’t see the point, function wise. Fashion is a whole other story.
I’ve had the same Maui Jim’s going on 3 years now and I love them. They are pretty stylish and the lens quality is awesome.
Francesco - I hadn’t ever really thought about that because I’ve been blessed with perfect vision (for now). I thought polarized lenses were really only good for fishing. Thanks for educating me
From what I have learned in my extensive sunglass research, unless the lenses are polarized, they are not really sunglasses. I always wondered why the sun was so bright with those dam Guccis. Not all glasses you think are sunglasses are…for example Ray Ban has regular tinted lenses as well as polarized lenses for their famous aviators…polarized are more expensive.
Polarized lenses reduces glare or light that isn’t directly hitting your vision. You can do little demos in the eye shops to see how it works.

Polarized sunglasses are definitely the cream of the crop…they dramatically reduce glare. However, buyer beware when you are purchasing sunglasses…just because they are tinted does not mean they block out UV rays. To be true sunglasses, they have to be tinted plus have UV protection, so make sure they are labeled as 100% UV protection. When you go a step further and buy polarized sunglasses (definitely worth it!), they filter out the extra brightness/glare and make your vision more comfortable.
