Father’s Day Gift Guide

June 12, 2008 by Haidee Cline

To all the fellas who are fathers…to children, dogs, or whatever. Keep up the good work!

If you’re still looking for a token of gratitude for dad, here are some gift ideas that you can pick up locally and have ready by Sunday.

Shout out to James, my brother-in-law, as he celebrates his first Father’s Day with my 1 month old niece.

For the backyard entertainer. Copper Fire Pit from Plow & Hearth. $149.95. What guy doesn’t like fire? And s’mores after grilling some burgers? This one is made of copper, which won’t burn or rust outdoors. Added bonus is that the bit of smoke should help to keep the bugs away.

For the foodie. A la carte olive oil from Oil & Vinegar. $20 - $30. With dozens of flavors from pomegranate to thyme, the olive oils at this relatively new Barracks shop are super tasty. Especially with their “dippers” which are chunks of herbs that you sprinkle into the oil. The display is cool and you can choose from different glass bottles that your pop can refill.

For the chef. Cooking classes / tools from the Seasonal Cook. $110 for two (so you can join him). While this requires that your dad be in town, wouldn’t cooking something new together be a fun way to celebrate your dad? Pair the gift certificate with a couple kitchen essentials like chip clips for a fun gift.

For the outdoors man. Fly Fishing Lessons with The Albemarle Angler. $250 - $300 If your dad has never been fly fishing, an introductory lesson and half day on the stream would be a great gift and a fun time spent together. If he has experience, The Albemarle Angler has various guided trips and workshops. If your dad is out of town, this would be a great reason to visit.

 Fly Fish

For the rum & coke kinda guy. Personalized Tervis Tumblers. $60. Very durable and very classic, personalized Tervis tumblers are a fun gift for the dad who enjoys a cool drink, with or without rum. So these might not be ready by Sunday, but wrap up the rum, coke and a bag of pistachios with a card that says his very own tumblers are on the way, personalized so mom can’t use them. Available online here or for order in Novel Boutique on the downtown mall.

For the boater. Sperry Top-siders. Approx $50 at Rack Room Shoes. If your dad doesn’t have a pair of these, I think any guy would enjoy them as they are super comfortable and go with just about anything. Primarily for boating, these shoes are a classic style that he’s sure to wear. If he does have a pair, and his feet are anything like my dad’s, then he needs a new pair for a fresh start (and throw out the old stinky ones).

For the equestrian. Leather Hoof Pick Belt at Eljos. $90. I’m not entirely sure if this is meant for horse owners / riders, but it sure does look very equestrian with a nod to Hermes. If your father fancies himself a Town & Country man, he’s sure to look dapper in this strapping belt.

For the sophisticate. Molton Brown products from London’s Bathecary. Prices Vary. While my dad only knows of Dial, yours might have a bit more sophisticated preferences when it comes to grooming. You can’t go wrong with Molton Brown. A British brand, its body washes and other products comes in fabulous, masculine scents. A nice care package paired with a good book and a note telling dad to relax would be quite thoughtful.

These are great ideas - I’d like the copper fire pit for myself (you had me at the mention of s’mores). Another potential gift for oenophile fathers is a selection of wines from any of the local vineyards. Picking up a few bottles for Dad is a perfect excuse to hang around and sample the varieties yourself.
