White House Black Market comes to Charlottesville - enter to win a $10 gift certificate!
July 30, 2008 by Haidee · 8 Comments
As a gal who likes to shop, I am thrilled about the arrival of another option for finding classic, reasonably priced clothes. If you’ve read my thoughts on shopping, you’ll know that, while I enjoy investing in a gorgeous piece of clothing every now and then, I also want to buy closet staples at a decent price. And dresses that can be worn to tailgates where beer will inevitably be spilled. So I welcome White House Black Market with open arms.
In the past, WHBM has been a bit too fuddy duddy for me. A little too Momish. They carry skorts for goodness sake! (No offense, Mom) However, I recently perused their website and found lots of cute things that I would absolutely wear. Read more
Become a Cville Food Star: a guide to local culinary resources
July 28, 2008 by Haidee · 2 Comments
I’ve been glued to the TV on Sunday nights watching The Next Food Network Star. I have also dedicated Sunday evenings as my time for culinary adventures. Last night, I tried an Italian-style Turkey Meatloaf with brown sugar glazed carrots and corn on the cob. Not bad!
I’d like to be able to further develop my “culinary point of view” and build a foundation for good food. So, in celebration of Aaron McCargo Jr.’s win last night, I have listed some local resources to help you become your own Food Star at home in Cville. Read more
With no ban on baggies, what to do with your plastic bags?
July 25, 2008 by Haidee · 4 Comments
Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported on the latest city to enforce a ban on plastic bags. Beginning in 2010, shoppers in Los Angeles will have to either carry their own tote or pay a store $.25 for a paper bag. I wonder, would the City of Cville consider such a mandate?
It certainly wouldn’t be convenient, but I like the idea. The McIntire Recycling Center has several signs to remind folks that they do not accept plastic bags. So, what do you do with these little buggers? Perhaps you hoard them until you can take them to the plastic bag bins at most grocery stores. Or maybe you reuse them for doggie duty. Or maybe you have no choice but to toss them.
Shakespeare NOT at the Ruins. Now at the Playhouse. As You Like It starts today!
July 24, 2008 by Haidee · 2 Comments
I’ve had Shakespeare at the Ruins on my mind and calendar since the first signs of summer (I’m a sucker for picnics and plays). Unfortunately, it seems that they are no longer performing at the ruins. Instead, the Four County Players will be performing at their playhouse, and As You Like It starts today through August 9.
While I would prefer theater al fresco, As You Like It is a perfect reason to take a 20 minute drive and check out the vineyards, shops and restaurants of Cville’s neighboring towns.
Buy-one-get-one-free sale at Gentle Gardener! Stock on your pots!
I made a trip to Gordonsville this afternoon to check out one of my favorite garden stores in the area, The Gentle Gardener. Sadly, they are closing their retail location. Happily, they are having a buy one, get one for free sale on everything in the store!
I stocked up on several blue glazed pots, something I’ve been swooning over for some time but always felt they were slightly more than I wanted to pay. I also purchased a lion head fountain spout for a little water feature on our deck as well as some terra cotta pots and river rocks. Such a deal! Read more
Peek inside a retro Richmond home
July 21, 2008 by Haidee · 4 Comments
I love peeking inside real homes for ideas and inspiration. ThisYoungHouse, a blog from our neighboring city, offered its readers a peek into one of Richmond’s quintessential 1940s bungalows. The homeowner is also the owner of Richmond’s hip and trendy secondhand store, Clementine’s. I can see that her style extends beyond the closet!
The style looks like a page out of Domino, inspired by bold patterns and colors. I love the infusion of contemporary design and bright colors into a traditional setting. Check out the rest of the tour here on ThisYoungHouse.
Getting sudsy with locally made soap
July 21, 2008 by Haidee · 9 Comments
I previously wrote about some very talented local Etsy sellers, one of which is the Primitive Earth Soap Company. Soon after the post, the soap maker herself sent me some samples to try.
They arrived adorably packaged and smelled fantastic. In all honestly, though, I expected the homemade soaps to disappoint. In my experience, natural soaps haven’t been sudsy enough and, therefore, feel ineffective as compared to super sudsy mass market body washes. But, I always like to try something new, especially something natural. And I was very pleasantly surprised! Read more

Bargain Days on the Downtown Mall, July 17 - 19
July 18, 2008 by Haidee · Leave a Comment
The Annual Old Fashioned Bargain Days are going on now on Cville’s Downtown Mall. Quite a long list of participants can be found here.

I am a girl after a bargain, and you will find me perusing the shops later today to see if I can grab something at a steal now that I might “need” later. Still, I can’t help but wonder if this year’s Bargain Days will see the same flurry as seen in previous years because of the economic squeeze. Read more
Scarpa Sale in progress! Now at 50% off!
July 16, 2008 by Haidee · 3 Comments
UPDATE - sale is now at 50% off.
Scarpa is having a great sale where most of the merchandise - including shoes, jewelry, handbags, and some chlothing - is 40% off. That will soon go to 50% off and eventually hit 75% off, although the day that it changes is a mystery. Guess I’ll have to stop in every day just in case. I have my eye on these little beauties…
