Shakespeare NOT at the Ruins. Now at the Playhouse. As You Like It starts today!

I’ve had Shakespeare at the Ruins on my mind and calendar since the first signs of summer (I’m a sucker for picnics and plays). Unfortunately, it seems that they are no longer performing at the ruins. Instead, the Four County Players will be performing at their playhouse, and As You Like It starts today through August 9.
While I would prefer theater al fresco, As You Like It is a perfect reason to take a 20 minute drive and check out the vineyards, shops and restaurants of Cville’s neighboring towns.
As You Like It is a story about love, passion, and disguise. It is a romantic comedy infused with cross-dressing. I’ve not seen it before, but I can already anticipate relating to young Rosalind and her crush on Orlando. While I never cross-dressed, there were many a crush in my junior high days that resulted in some pretty goofy behavior.
A preview of the play runs tonight at 8pm. Evening performances are scheduled to begin at 8pm on July 25, 26, 31 and August 1,2,7, 8 and 9. Afternoon performances are schedule for July 27 and August 3 and 9 beginning at 2:30pm. Friday and Saturdays have a small ticket price. Before an 8pm show, I suggest dropping by for a flight at Barboursville Vineyards tasting room. The gorgeous scenery offers many romantic strolling opportunities on the estate and through the ruins. Perfect prelude to a romantic comedy at the playhouse. If you want to make this a really special trip, you could do lunch at Palladio and a 2:30 Matinee, or even better, stay the night at the 1804 Inn.
Gordonsville is also an adorable little town and Pomme restaurant would be a perfect pre-theater dinner. I will be researching other restaurants and attractions out that way, so check back soon. If you have any suggestions, please send them my way!

I was almost positive they weren’t doing the show at the ruins this year? YOu may want to double check this with 4CP.
Jane - you are right. And up early. I got this information from an unnamed local weekly and posted it late last night. Then couldn’t sleep because something didn’t feel right. I called this morning and promptly updated the post.
