Hey, cut it out!

Have you ever drawn or designed something, but left the drawing board frustrated that you couldn’t fabricate your design? The days of elusive, expensive and timely manufacturing are over. Ponoko is here.

This might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Ponoko gives you access to a super expensive laser cutter for a lot less. No longer relegated to paper and graphic files, your designs can actually be fabricated in acrylic, hardwood and other materials.  Read more

Food For Thought

September 28, 2008 by Dr. Davis · 5 Comments

There seems to be a lot of hoopla lately over what to feed your furry friend.  What’s safe?  What’s not?  Gluten, wheat, fillers?  Does it matter?  Pet nutrition often takes a back seat in the realm of pet ownership, when in reality, it’s one of the most important factors of your animal’s health (and longevity).  If it ever comes between the cute little Burberry dog coat vs. your dog’s diet, forgo the albeit stylish outerwear and opt for the food purchase.  It’ll save you more in the long run.   Read more

The Domino Effect

September 27, 2008 by Haidee · 12 Comments

Once a month, I open my mailbox with a squeal of delight to see my Domino magazine waiting for me. I typically save it for later that night when I can sit back with a glass of wine and devour the publication in one fell swoop. I swoon over just about every page of the magazine with its fresh designs, modern-yet-classic styles, and unique products. It is one of my little monthly indulgences that usually leaves me looking around my own home thinking of ways to integrate what I’ll call the Domino Effect.

Corn Syrup Controversy: A Sticky Situation

September 26, 2008 by Laura Locke · 10 Comments

You know what’s stylish? Looking good, sure. Feeling good, absolutely. Being healthy is stylish.

I will be the first to admit that I’m not an expert when it comes to health and nutrition. I’m not a doctor. I’m not a scientist. I’m not a nutritionist. But I have some common sense when it comes to what I put in my body. There have been a few exceptions to this (undergrad late nights at Buddhist Biker Bar… I don’t like to talk about it).

In any case, I try to be mindful of what I eat and how it makes me feel. Read more

Have your morning coffee, Trailside

September 23, 2008 by HeatherM · 5 Comments

If you’re looking for something to do this weekend, head to Old Trail Golf Course, just 15 miles west of Charlottesville in Crozet (anyone can go, it’s public!). Not for golf, but for your morning wakeup call. There you’ll find one of the best-kept coffee secrets in Central Virginia: Trailside Coffee.

Mavens of Style - The Students

September 22, 2008 by Harvey C. French · 3 Comments

There’s much to be said about the ways of the fashion world, but when the mirror gets turned toward Charlottesville, VA - not necessarily considered the fashion capital of–well–anywhere - it was a pleasant surprise to find that even in the shadows of the Blue Ridge Mountains, people are not marking the passing of the season with a cookie cutter look they bought head-to-toe off the mannequin at their hometown department store. Students, especially.

No, my friends, in fact quite the contrary. Last week, two members of my team set out on the task of finding those who “dared” to have their own style. Not those, as you are probably imagining, with an aggressive sensibility - but people you see across the room and want to get to know - dare I say - want to be.

No More Slip Ups!

September 18, 2008 by HeatherM · 8 Comments

While the summer season winds down (fall starts on Monday, eek!), and temperatures dip into the mid-50’s overnight, I hesitate to even write about skirts for fear they will be an endangered species for the next 7 months.  However, in true Charlottesville fashion, we’re bound to experience at least one more heat wave before the real fall and winter weather kicks in.

So I’m going to lay my pet peeve on the line: I can’t stand it when women don’t wear slips under their [see-through] skirts.  Read more

LOL with Fine Whine paper goods…win a set of cocktail napkins!

September 18, 2008 by Haidee · 10 Comments

I recently came across the most delightful little cocktail napkins with what looked like traditional monograms, but upon second glance, turned out to be outrageous acronyms representing some oh-too-true statements.

DIET: Did I eat that?   PMS: Peculiar Mental State   RICH: Relax, It’s Cocktail Hour!

and my favorite…
