Hey, cut it out!

Have you ever drawn or designed something, but left the drawing board frustrated that you couldn’t fabricate your design? The days of elusive, expensive and timely manufacturing are over. Ponoko is here.

This might be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Ponoko gives you access to a super expensive laser cutter for a lot less. No longer relegated to paper and graphic files, your designs can actually be fabricated in acrylic, hardwood and other materials. Not limited to 2D, Ponoko can cut out the pieces that you design to make 3D objects, such as Ponokoster John’s laptop stand or Nervous’s orchid necklace. 

The 3D designs look rather complicated, but Ponoko has instructions and starter kits to help you. I might start with a 2D design…which are perfect for coasters, jewelry pieces, wall art, games, etc.

Even if you are not well versed in a graphic design software, Ponoko now accepts digital photos of your drawings! How fabulous would it be to have a lime green acrylic cut out or your Sharpie self portrait?

The possibilities are vast. Of course, now that I know this exists, I’m having a bit of designer block. What are you going to make?
