The statistics are sobering: there will be an estimated 200,000 new cases of breast cancer in 2008, and an estimated 40,000 women will die from breast cancer this year. If there is a silver lining, it is that mortality rates are decreasing and the five-year relative survival rate is up to 95%. I had a slight scare last year when my ObGyn found a lump. He sent me to the UVA Breast Clinic for further testing. The few days leading up to the further testing were scary and stressful, but I was blessed with a false alarm.
Still, I thought that I should share my thoughts on the UVA clinic. I was impressed. For such a scary thing, they have made it a very comfortable clinic with a spa-like, serene atmosphere. Everyone was very polite and comforting. The doctors gave me their full attention and made me feel at ease. We’ve got a great resource here in Cville for breast cancer treatment and research.
