Boo! Bark! Hiss! Having a Happy Halloween with your pet

I’m all stocked up for the 31st–Hydrogen peroxide, activated charcoal, stomach tubes, IV fluids…..the list goes on. While I’m handing out miniature KitKats, Snickers, and toothbrushes (I kid, I kid!) to costumed tykes this Halloween, I’ll be eyeing my pager awaiting the certain emergency call: My dog just inhaled a bag of [insert preferred form of chocolate here]!

Smell my feet. Give me something good to eat. But if you’re not into door to door groveling for candy, what is an adult to do to celebrate Halloween in Charlottesville? Read more
A lot of Hot Air

I’m not talking about empty promises from [insert your least-preferred Presidential nominee here]. I’m talking about a ride in a hot air balloon. This may sound touristy (it can be), but it’s the best way to see the emerging colors and fall foliage. Read more
Red Bird Ink

Red Bird Ink’s stationery designs from the “Snow Collection” immediately remind me of Robert Frost’s poem, Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.
Just in time for winter, the limited edition collection is inspired by memories of hiking through the snow. Handmade paper evokes the texture and reflective quality of snow, while the letterpressed blue gives off a cool feeling. The cards are then blind debossed to create the tracks in the snow, adding further depth. Can you spot the owl? Read more

Sephora Wish List

With the Sephora store opening right around the corner, I thought I’d scour their website in search of all the goodies I can check out in person when the doors open, reportedly, tomorrow. While ordering online has always been available, beauty products are just so much fun to play with. And what I love about Sephora is that you can try just about anything.
I’ve got my staples, but I love discovering new, perhaps playful or seasonal, items. Here are a few that are a must-see: Read more
A Girls’ Guide to Beer
October 11, 2008 by HeatherM · 4 Comments

In honor of Oktoberfest, I recently threw a beer-tasting party for a few friends. I organized the beers into 6 flights of 3 beers each. Much like when you do wine tastings and start off with the lighter whites before the heavy reds, the first flight consisted of Bud Light, Coors Light and Amstel Light. Then came the Vacation beers (a very “technical” beer term, of course): Corona, Sol, Tecate. Another flight contained the Pilsners: Heineken, Stella and Grolsch; the Belgian Whites: Hoegarden, Leffe, Wittekirke; the Pale Ales: Sierra Nevada, Starr Hill, Saranac; and finally, the “darker” beers: Red Stripe, Dos Equis Lager, Negro Modelo. (My friends and I voted to eliminate both the “frat beer” category (Natty Light, Keystone Light & Milwaukee’s Best) as well as the Guinness-type beers.) My goal was two-fold—not only to possibly “show off” one’s beer prowess by blind tasting each beer and trying to guess what it was, but also to figure out which beers we actually like so that we could order the right thing at a bar. CvilleStyle talks with Debbie Crosby-Louis, Image Consultant
October 11, 2008 by Ashley Simpson · 7 Comments
If you’ve ever watched TLC’s What Not To Wear, you’ve had the pleasure of viewing Stacey and Clinton siege, what I would characterize as, a style “take-over.” Playing the part of personal image consultants, the charismatic duo select (aesthetically clueless?) clients, “constructively” criticize their wardrobe, and go on to turn their style around, giving them the tips and personal attention necessary to transform any fashion-inept wallflower into style-empowered “maven.” The end result: a triumphant and dramatic, (albeit streamlined), style metamorphosis. What Not To Wear becomes “what to wear.”
Must-Have for Fall: Wiley Brothers Belts

Classic style is my favorite. For one, it’s timeless, so it’ll never go out of style, and secondly, it’s smart. The recent economic downturn has me definitely watching my wallet, so while I’m not buying this, you might see me buying one of these. Similarly, classic accessories are a worthwhile buy, and if you’re a supporter of local business, you’re in luck: Wiley Brothers Belts.
