Pretty in Pink
October 6, 2008 by HeatherM
One in eight women will be diagnosed with Breast Cancer in their lifetime. That should be enough of a reason to join the fight, so feel into your girly-girl side and don some pink—October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
Stop by Panera Bread for a Pink Ribbon Bagel, a portion of sales throughout the month of October will be donated to the UVA Breast Care Program. There, you can also purchase a silicone ring (the next generation from those silicone bracelets) for $1.
Or trade in your morning carbohydrates for an evening “toast.” For every bottle of this premium Pink Ribbon Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon sold, they’ll make a donation to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (all year long). Now that’s a cause for celebration!
The Melting Pot in Charlottesville is hosting The Ultimate Ladies Night Out as a Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser this Wednesday, October 8th. Reservation price is $35 and includes a salad, and cheese & chocolate fondue plus pinktinis. Pink champagne will also be available to toast to your good health. They are also giving out pink ribbon pins and Estee Lauder gift bags.
Instead of wearing your heart on your sleeve, you can show your support on your vehicle by purchasing a Breast Cancer Foundation specialized license plate for $25.
Get this Clinique limited edition Colour Surge Butter Shine lipstick from Sephora in its silvery case for just $16.50, $10 of which goes directly to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Martha’s Market is celebrating 15 years of giving this October 10 – 12. Five dollars gets you in the door of John Paul Jones Arena to visit a collection of unique boutiques, just in time for your holiday shopping! Proceeds benefit Breast Health Programs and Women’s Health Care in Central Virginia. Visit http://www.mjhfoundation.org/ for more information.
Online retailer Spoon sisters is donating 10% of proceeds of its Spoon sisters is donating 10% of proceeds of its pink ribbon items to breast cancer charities (plus 5% off online orders of $40 or more—enter “pink” at checkout). My favorite is the pink ribbon cookie cutter.
Don’t want to make it yourself? Satisfy your sweet tooth by stopping by Harris Teeter through October 15th for pink layer cakes, cupcakes and brownies (participating products will have a pink ribbon sticker). Five percent of the retail price will go to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Feeling the need to work off those sweets? Pick up a can of Wilson Pink Ribbon tennis balls (at Downtown Athletic, Dick’s Sporting Goods or Dick’s Sporting Goods or Walmart) and hit a few Maria Sharapova style (nice tuxedo top, Maria)!
More of an online type? Add the Pink Ribbon application to your facebook page, the goal of which is to raise $1,000,000).
And of course we’ve already mentioned Derriere de Soie’s 15% off all purchases, as well as the chance to sign up and enter to win a $25 gift certificate (enter “cvillestyle reader” in the notes section).
THINK PINK!

And don’t forget about the In the Pink Tennis Tournament that was held! All the entry fees were donated to Martha Jefferson’s Hospital Breast Cancer Center.
october is also domestic violence awareness month–yet another place that healthcare providers and women need to communicate! it would be great if we could get every provider who sees a woman for a checkup or mammogram to assess for violence in her life as well….
CWB: Thank you for bringing Domestic Violence Awareness Month (October) to my attention. It’s a very serious issue that often gets over-looked in our awareness-laden society. A quick google search found these jaw-dropping statistics:
• 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime
• An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year
• Approximately ¼ of all physical assaults on females perpetuated by intimate partners are reported to the police

On a side note, I recently had my annual ob/gyn checkup and they did in fact ask me if I felt safe in my home environment – a nice reassurance that some health providers are asking this question.

heather, i’m THRILLED that the staff at your provider’s office asked you that crucial question–studies show that just asking, even if a person isn’t ready to disclose, makes considerable difference in terms of leaving the relationship, getting help, etc. when at work, i wear a button that says, “is someone hurting you? you can talk to me about it.” i have them in several languages, and even though i’ve never had a new disclosure, a lot of people have stopped me to say how glad they were to see that someone cared.
Heather! thanks for all the brilliant creative and indulgent ways to support such an important cause! What to choose from… The increased awareness and support from so many businesses is such a postitive step toward a cure. Thanks for all your creative work!
Like I needed any excuse to wear pink! Check out the adorable new pink reusable grocery bags at Giant, y’all. They are cute enough to carry other stuff in too.
Jennie, did you play in the MJ tournament? Thanks for sharing, I didn’t know about it.
Thanks for the Giant bag tip, Shannon.
I feel good about my October so far — I started my morning w/ a pink ribbon bagel at Panera (did you know they’re in the shape of a ribbon & have dried cherries in them? They’re delish!), then stopped by Origins where I purchased Peace of Mind for $10, their signature pink ribbon item this year. I followed that up with
Martha’s market and picked up a few early holiday items; then went to Belk and purchased 3 Pink Ribbon coupons for $1 that get me 20% on home & shoe purchases this wknd (Oct 10 - 13). Not bad! And on Friday, I went to Derriere de soie to take advantage of their 15% off the entire store.
Now I need to give my wallet a rest!
A late addition, but a great service offered by Martha Jefferson:
Free Breast Health Screenings November 8 10am-2pm at the Outpatient Care center for women over 40 who are uninsured or not covered by their insurance.
