Fashion Faux Pas: Static Cling
December 3, 2008 by HeatherM · 2 Comments
Don’t get caught with unsightly static cling this winter. Not to get all Albert Einstein on you, but here’s a brief but simple background as to why it happens: when two different materials come in contact with one another, an exchange of electrons leaves one item more positively charged and the other more negative. Since unlike charges attract, the two materials stick to one another, known as static cling. Read more
Boo! Bark! Hiss! Having a Happy Halloween with your pet
October 29, 2008 by Dr. Davis · 2 Comments
I’m all stocked up for the 31st–Hydrogen peroxide, activated charcoal, stomach tubes, IV fluids…..the list goes on. While I’m handing out miniature KitKats, Snickers, and toothbrushes (I kid, I kid!) to costumed tykes this Halloween, I’ll be eyeing my pager awaiting the certain emergency call: My dog just inhaled a bag of [insert preferred form of chocolate here]!

Scott Stadium Style Review: Summer may be over, but the country club’s still open…
September 5, 2008 by Ashley Simpson · 4 Comments
Every fall, Charlottesville gathers to celebrate the opening of college football season: cars line Barracks Road, jerseys come out, and ESPN tunes in, never failing to generate buzz.
But the biggest show in town may not be the game; we all know that UVA football season is as much about social scene- and style for that matter- as it is about sport.
Charlottesville Women’s Four Miler this Saturday 8/30
August 27, 2008 by Haidee · 2 Comments
This Saturday morning, over 2,500 women will travel four miles of beautiful country roads as they make their way to the finish line of the Charlottesville Women’s Four Miler, Virginia’s largest all-women event honoring the UVA Cancer Center Breast Care Program. Running, walking, trotting, or dancing, these ladies are sure to have fun and feel good as they race in the name of breast cancer prevention, treatment and research.
Hog callin’ and bluegrass at the Albemarle County Fair 7/29 - 8/3
We have an Italian friend staying with us this weekend on his first trip to the States, and I cannot wait to take him to the Albemarle County Fair. After Monticello, vineyards and the Cvillain Bash on Saturday night, the County Fair will round out his trip to Virginia quite nicely, don’t you think?
Whether you find the County Fair just a charming novelty or you are gearing up for your fifth blue ribbon in Dairy Goats, it should be a fun time for all. Here is where you’re bound to find me on the fairgrounds… Read more
With no ban on baggies, what to do with your plastic bags?
July 25, 2008 by Haidee · 4 Comments
Yesterday, the Wall Street Journal reported on the latest city to enforce a ban on plastic bags. Beginning in 2010, shoppers in Los Angeles will have to either carry their own tote or pay a store $.25 for a paper bag. I wonder, would the City of Cville consider such a mandate?
It certainly wouldn’t be convenient, but I like the idea. The McIntire Recycling Center has several signs to remind folks that they do not accept plastic bags. So, what do you do with these little buggers? Perhaps you hoard them until you can take them to the plastic bag bins at most grocery stores. Or maybe you reuse them for doggie duty. Or maybe you have no choice but to toss them.
Shakespeare NOT at the Ruins. Now at the Playhouse. As You Like It starts today!
July 24, 2008 by Haidee · 2 Comments
I’ve had Shakespeare at the Ruins on my mind and calendar since the first signs of summer (I’m a sucker for picnics and plays). Unfortunately, it seems that they are no longer performing at the ruins. Instead, the Four County Players will be performing at their playhouse, and As You Like It starts today through August 9.
While I would prefer theater al fresco, As You Like It is a perfect reason to take a 20 minute drive and check out the vineyards, shops and restaurants of Cville’s neighboring towns.
Bargain Days on the Downtown Mall, July 17 - 19

The Annual Old Fashioned Bargain Days are going on now on Cville’s Downtown Mall. Quite a long list of participants can be found here.

I am a girl after a bargain, and you will find me perusing the shops later today to see if I can grab something at a steal now that I might “need” later. Still, I can’t help but wonder if this year’s Bargain Days will see the same flurry as seen in previous years because of the economic squeeze. Read more
Prime picking time…cherries and peaches at local orchards
July 3, 2008 by Haidee · 5 Comments
Summer isn’t summer until you’ve picked your own fruit. No need to buy a bushel shipped from South America. Nope, just head out into the Central Virginia countryside. Cherries, peaches, nectarines…all of these are available right in our backyard.
